The Standard & Poor's 500 stock price index measures the stock prices of the largest 500 companies in the U.S. Also, the index is used as a benchmark for returns from the market.

Standard & Poor’s (S&P) is a financial services company. They created this signature stock market index in 1957 - the S&P 500 Index with ticker symbol SPX.
